FAQs

What is a Building Regulations Principal Designer?

The Building Regulations Principal Designer (BRPD) is a statutory dutyholder role created under the Building (Appointment of Persons, Industry Competence and Dutyholders) Regulations 2023, made under the Building Safety Act 2022. The BRPD must be appointed by the client on any project where more than one designer is involved, regardless of whether the building is higher-risk (HRB).

When should I appoint a Principal Designer?

For CDM, the Principal Designer must be appointed during the pre-construction phase.

For Building Regulations, the BRPD should be engaged early, ideally at feasibility or RIBA Stage 2, to ensure compliance strategies are embedded from the start.

What's the difference between PD(CDM) and BRPD roles?

CDM Principal Designer (PD(CDM)) focuses on health and safety during design. Building Regulations Principal Designer (BRPD) focuses on regulatory compliance and coordination with Building Control.
